WHAT ARE THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF ACTIVE TRAVEL?

1. Time saving

Cycling times are more reliable and less affected by traffic, as well as being more resilient as it is less affected by road closures than other vehicles. It fits exercise into people's busy schedules, so it saves them time by not having to exercise at another point in the day. The Value of extra time saved with 10% journeys by cycle estimated £15m/year (in Oxfordshire).

2. Health and productivity

Physical activity improves cognition and academic achievement- So increasing Active Travel means: A workforce that is healthier in body and mind, a workforce that is at work more often, and more productive when it is, and less burden on the health service, freeing up public money.

3. Creating an attractive environment for people and businesses

Active cities are more attractive: Active cities and areas; Have higher property prices, boost footfall and retail trading, Increase retail rents, have the ‘Feel Good’ factor. Top employers recognise these benefits of active travel, so invest in active travel infrastructure. For example, one quote from an employer was; “We value [our employees’] safety and we want to promote active lifestyles. We also note strong evidence that more cycling increases spending in local retail businesses and lowers air pollution levels.” – John Ridding, CEO

4. The Tourist Economy

Active travel can benefit the tourist economy on local, mid and large scales. For example, in Oxfordshire, there are at least 10 organised rides in the county each weekend. This leads to more spending in the area, such as cafes (e.g. the initiative makes £50 per visit, equalling £26k per year). On a mid-scale, mountain bike centres- for example- are set up, which creates jobs for people. For example, Cwm Carn employ 5-20 people in maintenance, café, bike shop, bike rental, "uplift £100-500k/yr turnover businesses." On a large scale, the South West Coast Path attracts 8.6m walking visitors a year, spending £436m in the surrounding areas

5. Social Inclusion

Bikes are very cheap in relation to cars and even public transport fairs, so it means more people are able to get involved with active travel. In addition, walking is free so everyone who is physically able can be involved in that mode of travel! However biking has its advantages over walking, because as mentioned before, it saves time- i.e. it increases the 'one hour of travel' range from 3 miles from walking to 12 miles from cycling.
